How to settle up a home poker game

The game's over, the chips are counted, and now someone has to work out who owes who. Here's a simple method that works for any home game, with a worked example.

1. Add up what everyone put in

For each player, total every buy-in and rebuy. If Maya bought in for $20 and rebought twice for $20, she put in $60. This is where most home games go wrong: a rebuy handed over mid-hand and never written down.

2. Count what everyone finished with

Count each player's chips and turn them into money. Then check: the total cashed out should equal the total bought in. If it doesn't, recount before anyone pays.

3. Work out each player's result

Result = cashed out − bought in. Winners are positive, losers negative, and everything adds up to zero.

PlayerInOutResult
Alex$40$95+$55
Sam$60$72+$12
Maya$40$8−$32
Leo$60$25−$35

4. Pay out in the fewest transfers

Pair the biggest loser with the biggest winner and pay as much as you can between them. Repeat until everyone is at zero. In the example, Leo (−$35) pays Alex $35, then Maya (−$32) pays Alex $20 and Sam $12. That's three payments instead of up to six.

The easy way: track it as you play

Most settle-up arguments come from buy-ins nobody remembers. With Pokr Pals, the host taps + on a seat for every buy-in and rebuy, and everyone can follow the pot on a shared link. At the end, enter chip counts and you get who pays whom instantly, with a paid checkbox for each transfer.

Questions

What's the fairest way to settle a home poker game?

Work out each player's net result (cash-out minus total buy-ins), then have losers pay winners directly. Paying biggest loser to biggest winner first keeps the number of payments low.

Should everyone pay the host, and the host pays winners?

You can, but it doubles the number of payments and puts the host in the middle of every transfer. Paying winners directly is faster and easier to check.

What if the chip count doesn't match the money?

Recount before anyone pays. The usual causes are a rebuy nobody wrote down or a stack counted twice. Tracking buy-ins as they happen avoids this.

How do you handle rebuys when settling?

Add every rebuy to that player's total buy-in. Their result is their final chips minus everything they put in.
